Bahrain is an archipelago. At 34 miles long by 11 miles wide, Bahrain Island is the largest land mass. Bahrain claims to be a constitutional monarchy headed by the King, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa; however, given its dictatorial oppression, lack of parliamentary power and lack of an independent judiciary, most observers assert that Bahrain is an absolute monarchy. After 3 July 2002, Bahrain was split into five administrative governorates, each of which has its own governor. When the Central Governorate was abolished in September 2014, its territory divided and shared among the Northern Governorate, Southern Governorate, and Capital Governorate.

Purchasing a property in Bahrain comes with permanent residency rights. Legislative Decree No 2 of 2001 states that non-Bahrainis, whether natural or corporate persons, may own land in Bahrain. Foreigners, resident or not, can now buy property and rent it out in Ahmed Al-Fateh, Hoora, Bu Ghazal, Seef, and Northern Manama, which are all in the capital city, Manama. Foreigners can also buy in Durrat Al-Bahrain, Amwaj Islands, and Dannat Hawar – reclaimed areas earmarked for tourist developments.
